FREDERICTON (CNB) - Lupine Lodge, a historic property on Campobello Island, will be preserved for the long-term through an agreement that will transfer the property to the Roosevelt Campobello International Park Commission from the Department of Tourism and Parks.
The commission, which includes both Canadian and American representatives, has expertise in preserving historical assets.
"The Lupine Lodge needs significant infrastructure upgrades and the commission is in a position to make this happen," said Hédard Albert, acting minister of tourism and parks.
Built in 1915, the lodge, also known as Adam's Estate, was once the summer home of Frederick Adams, cousin of the late U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. During the past decade, the lodge and restaurant have been privately operated under concession agreements with the Department of Tourism and Parks.
"Our objectives are to attract more visitors and more conferences to the Island," said Skip Cole, superintendent/executive secretary of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park. "The addition of the Adam's Estate fits perfectly into the commissions goals."
The Roosevelt Campobello International Park is the largest employer on the island and is owned, funded, staffed and administered by people from both Canada and the United States. The park has tens of thousands of visitors each year.
The Department of Tourism and Parks will continue to manage and retain ownership of Herring Cove Provincial Park and the Herring Cove Golf Course.

I hope the restored Adam's
I hope the restored Adam's cottage will be an inn and restaurant for tourists as it was during the Lupine Lodge years And I fervently hope that the historical character of the rooms and furnishings will be retained, including the beautiful room with the loft, and the elegant historic bathtubs and sinks from the early twentieth century. It would be a real loss to remove those and replace them with modern bathroom fixtures. The retro fixtures were part of the charm. I really miss Lupine Lodge as a great place to stay while on vacation. I hope it will be restored with care and respect for the past but really fear that the historical authenticity will be lost in the name of "modernization' and "upgrading".
Thank you, RCIP! We look
Thank you, RCIP! We look forward to your stewardship.
What great news to hear that
What great news to hear that the Adams' estate will become part of RCIP! It only makes sense to keep what history we have all together. So glad they finally made a decision!
Unfortunately we will not
Unfortunately we will not open it this year. lots of repairs to make. A tree fell on the roof over the winter. We have not yet decided how best to use the Adams Cottage, but would welcome your suggestions.
After years of visiting
After years of visiting Campobello, several years ago we purchased property and built a cabin on that beautiful island. Our primary residence is in Rockport, Maine, however, we spend a great deal of time at our cabin. We're delighted to learn that the Roosevelt estate is taking over the Lupine Lodge/Adams residence. We've always stopped in to the lodge, if for nothing else, to enjoy sitting on the deck and enjoying the spectacular view, however felt it so sad that that beautiful land and lodge have not had benefit of better upkeep and/or renovation.
As for suggestions, we would love to see the lodge totally restored and become an updated, at least 3 season, Inn/Restaurant. Even winter would be wonderful with the addition of well advertised cross country skiing trails in the Park and/or throughout the island with a wonderful, comfortable Inn offering a great menu and comforatble airy rooms to return to. It would bring funds to the Roosevelt Park, to the island in general, as well as offer employment to the people of the island who are in such need of employment. We mention more advertising because there are so many people, both American and Canadian, who never even heard of Campobello. With the recent vote by Campobello residents to incorporate, an Inn/Restaurant, actually anything, would be helpful in moving the island, the Park and Campobello residents forward.
My husband is a Master Electrician and currently going through the process of gaining papers allowing him to practice his trade on Campobello. He would love to be a part of the reconstruction/renovation process at the Lupine Lodge. He'll be lookiong into that when we go to our cabin on Wednesday, through the Memorial Day weekend.
